Science
| Equipment | Use |
|---|---|
| Beaker | holds liquids, can be used to heat substances, or can be used to measure volume, though they don't measure volume very accurately. |
| Erlenmeyer Flask | holds solids or liquids, can be used to heat substances, and can be closed up with a rubber stopper. |
| Florence Flask or a round bottom flask | used for the mixing or heating of chemicals. The narrow neck prevents splash exposure. |
| Stirring Rod | used to manually stir solutions. Can also be used to transfer a single drop of a solution. They are very fragile. |
| Thermometer | measures the temperature of substances. Never stir liquids with it. |
| Graduated Cylinder | used to accurately measure volumes of liquids. |
| Test Tubes | used to (hold) heat small amounts of substances in a flame. |
| Test Tube Rack | holds test tubes. |
| Test Tube Holders | holds test tubes that are too hot to handle with your hands. |
| Test Tube Brushes | used to clean test tubes and graduated cylinders. |
| Rubber Stoppers and Corks | both used to close containers to avoid spillage or contamination. Never heat when there is one in place. |
| Well Plates | used when you want to perform many small scale reactions at one time. |
| Watch Glass | used to hold a small amount of solid, such as the product of a reaction. Could temporarily serve to cover beakers. |
| Dropper | used to transfer a small volume of liquid. |
| Forceps | used to pick up small objects. |
| Funnel | used to aid in the transfer of liquid from one container to another. |
| Disposable Pipette | used to transfer a few drops of liquid from one place to another. Can be thrown away. |
| Wash Bottle | has a spout that delivers a wash solution to a specific area. |
| Spatulas | used to move solid chemicals from their containers. |
| Tongs | used to move substances or containers that you prefer not to touch, or shouldn't touch. |
| Beaker Tongs | used to move beakers containing hot liquids. |
| Bunsen Burner | used for the heating of nonvolatile liquids and solids. Connects to gas jets with rubber tubing. |
| Striker | used to light Bunsen burners. |
| Inoculating Loop | used to transfer bacteria from one location or to another. |
| Evaporating Dish | used for the heating of stable solid compounds and elements. |
| Metal Ring | connects to a ring stand and provides a stable, elevated platform for heating beakers or other containers. |
| Test Tube Clamp | used to secure test tubes to the ring stand. |
| Wire Gauze | sits on the iron ring to provide a place to stand a beaker. The clay promotes even heating, which will prevent beakers from breaking during heating. |
| Ring Stand | used with other equipment, to hold containers or other items up over a flame. |
| Beaker Stand | used with other equipment, to hold containers or other items up over a flame. Similar to a ring stand. |
| Scoopula | used to "scoop" chemicals out of containers. Like a spatula. |
| Triple Beam Balance | used to measure mass of an object. |
| Mortar and Pestle | used to grind up substances into powder. |
| Anemometer | measures wind speed. |
| Spring Scale | measures force in Newtons. |
| Rubber Mitt | used to pick up hot glassware without burning your hands. |
| Barometer | used to measure air pressure. (which can help predict the weather) |
| Petri Dish | used to grow bacteria or to hold substances. Made out of plastic or glass. |
| Safety Glasses | used for minimum safety in the lab. Not for fire, chemical, or glassware safety. |
| Safety Goggles | used for eye safety when working with chemicals, fire, or glassware. |
| Fire Blanket | used to smother fires on people. the fabric is flame resistant. |
| Fire Extinguisher | used to put out fires. Only use water based on people, otherwise use a fire blanket on people. Remember PASS method when using. |
