ECE2-06 Safe Environment

| Isolation Area | Area of classroom or separate space where a sick up upset child can be cared for. |
| Exclusion Policy | A child care center's policy that states when an ill child should be kept at home. |
| Prevention | Taking action to keep something from happening |
| Indoor environment | Appropriate flooring, furniture and materials that would help to keep a child safe. |
| Outdoor environment | Appropriate surface, equipment and materials used outdoors for play that keep a child safe. |
| Boundaries | Setting limits and rules in the classroom to help keep children safe. |
| Self Control | Children learning to manage their own behavior for their own safety and the safety of classmates. |
| Surface (outdoor) | grass or loose material like mulch that is soft for falls and help to prevent injuries |
| Stationary Equipment | Furniture or outdoor equipment that is permanently affixed to the floor or ground for stability. |
| Adult-to-Child ratios | The number of adults needed for the children of various ages in a school or child care facility |
| Food safety | Ensuring that all foods are purchased, stored, prepared and disposed of in a way that protect against contamination |
| Poisons | Substances known to be dangerous to ingest or come into contact with |
| Material/Toy selection | Choosing toys based on planned use and the developmental stage of the children who will use them |
| Material/Toy condition | Carefully inspecting toys and equipment on a regular basis to ensure all are in good working order to be safe for continued use. |
| Supervision | providing constant oversight by adults or trained individuals to maintain order and ensure safety. |
| Accident Report | A written document used to record any incident for liability record keeping and to notify parents. Includes time of incident, details, witnesses, response, child's reaction, and other important details. |
| Germ Transmission | How germs are passed for one person or thing to another |
| Authorized List | The contact information of all people who are approved to pick a child up from school |
| Emergency Plan | Prearranged procedures to help maintain order and safety in the case of a weather, intruder, fire or other incident. |
| Direct Guidance | Physically getting involved to remove a child from danger, by picking them up, taking them by the hand, etc. |
