European Explorers

Early Exploration

QuestionAnswer
Christopher Columbus Italian explorer who wanted to find East Asia by sailing West across the Atlantic Ocean. He mistakenly discovered the Americas, landing at the islands of the Bahamas, Cuba, and Hispaniola. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella supported him.
Ferdinand Magellan Portuguese explorer who sailed for Spain and was the first person to circumnavigate the earth.
Henry Hudson An English explorer who was looking for the elusive "Northwest Passage" to China. A river, bay, and strait are named for him.
Amerigo Vespucci Italian explorer who was the first person to realize the Americas were separate from the continent of Asia. America is named after him.
Jacques Cartier French explorer who led three expeditions to Canada. He was looking for a route to the Pacific through North America (Northwest Passage) but did not find one.
Hernando de Soto A Spanish explorer and conquistador who led the first European expedition deep into the territory of the modern-day United States, and the first documented to have crossed the Mississippi River.
Robert la Salle French explorer who was sent by King Louis XIV to travel south from Canada and sail down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. His mission was to explore and establish fur trade routes along the river.
