ECE3-09 Brain Development

Brain purpose | store, use and create information. Brain development begins 3 weeks after conception. |
Neurons | specialized nerve cells, billions of these are present at birth |
Synapse | connections between neurons, much more plentiful in children who are appropriately stimulated |
Cerebrum | used for thinking, knowledge, memory and decision making |
Cerebellum | used for posture, coordination and balance |
Brainstem | responsible for survival and reflexs like breathing and heart rate |
Medulla Oblongata | the part of the brain stem responsible for breathing and heart rate |
Pons | the part of the brain stem responsible for connecting nerves to the brain |
Midbrain | responsible for eye movement and head reflexes, vision movement, and hearing. |
Thalamus | interprets sensory messages, regulates sleep, relays motor functions |
Hypothalumus | responsible for body temperature and hunger |
Pituitary Gland | a gland responsible for secreting hormones that control body temp, metabolism, sexual development, and emotional response |
Limbic System | responsible for emotional responses, hormonal secretions, mood, motivation, and pain/pleasure sensations |
Windows of Opportunity | a specific span of time during which certain types of normal brain development are possible. |
