Adaptable Design | Design features that are temporary and can be easily changed |
Archaeologist | Scientist who studies history through the relics and remains of old civilization |
Barrier-Free Design | Living spaces designed without structure that prevent access to people with special needs |
Housing | Any structure built for people to live in |
Lifestyles | Way of living |
Nomads | People who wander from place to place in search of food for their grazing herds |
Physical needs | All the things the human body needs to survive: air, sunlight, shelter, sleep, and food |
Psychological needs | Needs related to thoughts and emotions |
Universal design | A philosophy of designing interiors and products to accommodate all people with a variety of requirements, needs, and equipment |
Baby Boomers | People born in the 20 year period immediately after World War 2 |
Demographics | The statistical characteristics of a population |
Extended Family | Other relatives in addition to parents and children |
Nuclear Family | A father, mother, and 1 or more children |
Single Parent Family | One parent living with one or more children |
Culture | Combo of all the customs, beliefs, and ideas of a group of people |
Household | Made up of all the people who live in one housing unit |
Status | The way a person’s importance in society is perceived by others |
Telecommute | Work from home while keeping in touch with your employer's office |
Automated Management System | Central control units that over-see daily functions in a home |
Biomaterials | organically based building materials manufactured from recycled matter, used in construction in many ways |
Biometrics | reading the physical characteristics of a person to allow entry |
Computer Aided Design (CAD) | soft-ware that enables designers, architects, and drafters to make construction drawing, interior, designs and other drawings |
Conventional Construction | is a building method in which materials are cut and assembled piece by piece at the home site |
Engineered Wood Products | manufactured materials form from wood |
Green Building | is designing, building and operating home homes to use materials, energy, and water efficiently |
Manufactured Homes | is a dwelling completely assembled at a factory and transported to site |
Site | the land and surrounding environment on which the home will be built |
Systems Built Homes | dwellings whose parts are manufactured in a factory with the building completed at site |
Modular Home | homes made up of separate box like sections, or modules |
Technology | defined as the practical application of knowledge-people using what they know to change the environment |
Ability | A skill you already have developed |
Apprenticeship | Combines on-the-job training by a skilled worker and classroom instruction |
Aptitude | Natural talent or your potential for learning a skill |
Employability Skills | General skills required to acquire and retain a job |
Entrepreneurs | People who start their own business |
Entry-Level Job | One that requires little training, though often a high school diploma |
Interview | A formal meeting between an employer and a job applicant |
Job application | A form employers use to ask questions about an applicant’s skills, work experience, education, and interests |
Job Shadowing | Spending time with a person at work and learning by watching as he or she performs the functions of the job |
Mentors | Successful workers who share their expert knowledge and demonstrate correct work behaviors |
Networking | Communication with people you know or can get to know to share information and advice |
Portfolio | A collection of examples of your best work |
Resume | A brief summary of your person information, education, skills, work experience, activities, and interests |
References | People, such as teachers and former employers, who will recommend you to an employer |
