Weather Factors

TermDefinition
Greenhouse Effect The process by which gases hold heat in the atmosphere.
Thermal Energy The total energy of motion in the particles of a substance.
Conduction Heat transfer between two substances that are in contact.
Anemometer An instrument that measures wind speed.
Local Winds Winds caused by unequal heating within a small area.
Global Winds Winds that blow steadily over long distances.
Psychrometer An instrument that measures relative humidity.
Cumulonimbus Clouds Large clouds that produce thunderstorms.
Cumulus Clouds Clouds near the ground that look like fluffy heaps of cotton.
Cirrus Clouds High, feathery looking clouds made up of ice crystals.
Stratus Clouds Layered clouds that cover much of the sky and are dull gray.
Precipitation Any form of water that falls from clouds.
Convection The transfer of heat by fluid movement.
Dew Point The temperature at which water in air changes from gas to liquid.
