TermDefinition
autocracy a government with a single ruler with unlimited power, and citizens have little or no role in the government. Example: Cuba
democracy a government with supreme power given to the people. Examples: United Kingdom, Russia, and Germany
parliamentary democracy a government with executive power given to members of a legislature who choose a leader. Examples: United Kingdom and Germany
presidential democracy a government with separate executive and legislative branches, which are both elected by the citizens. Example: Russia
monarch a king or queen who inherits the position. Example: United Kingdom
prime minister the title of the head of government in most parliamentary democracies. Example: United Kingdom
head of government the top leader who manages day-to-day activities in a government
head of state the top leader who represents a government at official and ceremonial functions, but may not manage day-to-day activities
chancellor the title of the head of government in Germany.
president the title of the head of government (and head of state) in a presidential democracy; Example: Russia
bicameral having a legislature divided into two houses.
political party an organization which represents a specific political agenda and socioeconomic positions within a given nation.
