Four universal aspects of death 1: announcement of death, care for the deceased person, ceremony to offer support to family and memorialization of the deceased, acceptable method of disposition.
True or false: obituaries and death notices are the same things. False. The death notice offers basic facts about deceased, surviving family and place of service. Obituaries often highlight decedents' life, accomplishments, etc...
Four purposes of funeral services: Religious Purpose, Philosophical Purpose, Sociological Purpose, and Psychological Purpose
Religious Purpose: Affirmation of faith. ie: a system of beliefs
System of Beliefs: Ritual actions, overt conduct, sacred scriptures, sacred traditions
Philosophical Purpose: To provide a focal point for giving meaning to life and to death.
Sociological Purpose: The funeral as a social institution, meets social needs by disposal of the body, affirming the dignity of the deceased within the community, and allowing the community an expression of concern for the bereaved family.
Psychological Purpose: Gives the bereaved family a way to adjust to the loss of the deceased.
Examples of ways family members's needs are met: Helps emphasis the reality of death, normalizes emotional expression, freedom to verbalize feelings, encourages support from family and friends, ceremonies offer spiritual support, beauty of services provides comfort, viewing offers realization of death.
Information to be taken during notification of death: name of deceased; location; name, telephone and relationship/authority of the caller; name of attending physician; whether or not physician or ME has been called.
Who is the coroner? An elected official who investigates questionable or unattended deaths. Does not have to be a medical doctor, but has to at least work under one.
Important questions for first call: age of deceased, approximate height & weight, permission to embalm?, method of final disposition, is family/facility ready for the funeral home personnel to arrive?
If removing body from a hospital, nursing home or other institution, collect the following information: Name, address and phone of next of kin & the person authorizing release to the fun home, time of release, is there refrigeration available, what entrance to be used.
Who has to release a deceased person to the funeral director? An attending physician, a coroner or medical examiner.
Where should you always leave a copy of the first call while on a removal run? Leave a copy of the first call at the office/funeral home.
Supplies for Adult removal cot, collapsible stretcher, sheets & cot cover, pillow or head block, rubber or plastic sheet, towels, zippered mortuary body bag, straps, protective clothing, sanitary accessories.
Supplies for Infant removal baby blanket, bassinet or infant carrier, small rubber or plastic sheet
How many people should go on a transfer run from a residence? Two, one staff enters the house, the other remains in the transfer vehicle.
