Learning About Children Vocabulary
Term | Definition |

Typical Behaviors | Ways of acting or responding that are common at each stage of childhood |
Caregivers | Parents and others who tend to children. |
Stimulations | Activities that arouse a baby's sense of sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. |
Sequence | An order of steps. |
Heredity | The biological transfer of certain characteristics from earlier generations. |
Environment | People, places, and things that surround and influence a person, including family, home, school, and community. |
Human Life Cycle | This continues through life- from birth to death. |
Developmental Tasks | Different challenges that must be met or skills to be acquired based on the human life cycle. |
Self-esteem or self-worth | This refers to the value people place on themselves. |
Subjective | Type of observation relying on personal opinions and feelings, rather than facts. |
Objective | Observations based on facts, and leaves aside personal feelings and prejudices. |
Running record | Writing down everything observed for at least 15 minutes. |
Anecdotal record | Record used by the observer concentrating on a specific area of development. The time is not limited |
Frequency count | This record is a tally of how often a certain behavior occurs. This record is useful when trying to change an unwanted behavior. |
Baseline | A count mad before any steps are taken to try to change the behavior. |
Developmental checklist | A list of skills children should master, or behaviors they should exhibit at a certain age. |
