Elements&Principles
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What are the elements of design? | Line, texture, color, space, shape, form |
What are the principles of design? | Balance, rhythm, proportion/scale, emphasis, harmony |
What is the principle repetition? | Repeating color, line, form, or texture |
How does texture affect color? | Smooth texture= reflects light, color looks brighter Rough texture= absorbs light, color looks darker/duller |
What do curved lines suggest? | Natural, casual feel, soft |
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? | Vertical balance=top and bottom are equal Horizontal balance=left and right are equal Radial balance=start from the middle and work your way out (circle, like the rays of a sun) |
What do diagonal lines suggest? | Movement, action, excitement |
What is space? | Space is the area provided for a paticual purpose |
What are the four types of rhythm? | Repetition, radiation, gradation, continous line |
What is asymmetrical balance? Example? | When something looks equally balanced but the objects on either side are not identical. EX- 1 orange pot is on the left side of a table, 1 yellow and fatter vase is on the right side of a table |
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? | Horizontal lines suggest restful, comfortable, and wide. Vertical lines suggest strong, formal, height, and stability. |
What is the golden mean? | A ratio that is 3 to 5 |
What is the difference between shape and form? | Shape is 2-D and flat and form is 3-D and has mass |
What are the five types of balance? | Radial, vertical, horizontal, symmetrical, asymmetrical |
What does unity or harmony mean? | Harmony is how the elements and principals of design work together to complement each other |
What are the two things texture involves? | How something actually feels, how something looks to feel like |
What are the four types of line? | Vertical, horizontal, curved, diagonal |
What is proportion? | The size of an object compared to the rest of the room; how things relate to each other; one part to the whole |
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? | Asymmetrical or informal |
What is symmetrical balance? Example? | Symmetrical balance is formal and when things are the exact same on either side. An example is a butterfly |
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? | Emphasis is the focus of attention;focal point. |
What happens when you use a continuous line? | It draws your eyes up or down |
What is another name for symmetrical balance? | Formal |
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? | Informal |
What is the difference between gradation and radiation? | Gradation is when you use the same object but you change one thing about it as it goes on. Radiation is when your eyes start in the middle of an object and travel outwards. |
