Emigrate Emigration is the act of leaving one's country or region with the intent to settle permanently in another.
Ethnic group a socially-defined category of people who identify with each other based on common ancestral, social, cultural, or national experience.
Steerage Steerage
Sweatshop a factory or workshop, especially in the clothing industry, where manual workers are employed at very low wages for long hours and under poor conditions.
Assimilate take in and understand fully.
Tenement a room or a set of rooms forming a separate residence within a house or block of apartments. noun: tenement house; plural noun: tenement houses 2.
Slum a squalid and overcrowded urban street or district inhabited by very poor people.
Suburb an outlying district of a city, especially a residential one.
Protestant a member or follower of any of the Western Christian churches that are separate from the Roman Catholic Church and follow the principles of the Reformation, including the Baptist, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches.
Immigrant a person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country.
Nativism the policy of protecting the interests of native-born or established inhabitants against those of immigrants.
Persecute subject to hostility and ill-treatment, especially because of their race or political or religious beliefs.
