Unit 4 Earth's forces
Term | Definition |

weathering | The breakdown of materials of Earth's crust into smaller pieces. The breaking of rock into sediment. |
erosion | The movement of sediment by wind, water, ice or gravity. |
deposition | The process by which sediment is laid down, or placed, in a new location. |
watershed | An area of land where all of the ground and surface water from the area drains into the same place. |
Catastrophic event | A violent, usually destructive, natural or man-made occurrence where change occurs. |
mechanical weathering | The breaking down of rocks by physical processes. |
Chemical weathering | The breaking down of rocks by chemical agents. |
Climate | The average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time. |
atmosphere | The layer of gases that surround a planet. |
hydrosphere | The water located on top of the Earth's surface and underground. |
lithosphere | The land(rocks). The solid portion of a planet. |
biosphere | The organisms that live on a planet. |
