Plant Unit Review

QuestionAnswer
From what organism did plants evolve from? algae
Plants are Eukaryotic. what does this mean? every cell has a nucleus
Plants are also multicellular, this mean__? made of many cells
Plants are photosynthetic and get food from what energy source? sun
Algae are not plants, what are they? Protists
How did algae cool the atmosphere to make it possible for life to begin? Used up a lot of CO2 (carbon dioxide)
What do we call the waxy, waterproof coating on a plant that prevents water loss? cuticle
List at least 2 of the 3 seedless non-vascular plants we studied. hornworts, liverworts, mosses
List at least 2 of the 3 seedless vascular plants we studied horsetails, club mosses, ferns
What is the difference between mosses and club mosses? Club mosses have vascular tissue, moss does not
If seedless plants don't produce seeds, what do they produce for reproduction? spores
Which stage of reproduction produces the sperm and egg cells? sporophyte or gametophyte? gametophyte ie sperm and eggs are gametes
In what kind of environment would you expect to find seedless, nonvascular plants growing? wet and moist
Name the 2 types of vascular tissue xylem and phloem
What are the fronds on fern plants? leaves
2 kinds of seed plants are gymnosperms and angiosperms. Which of these has "naked" seeds and cones? gymnosperms
What 2 things do angiosperms produce that gymnosperms don't produce? flowers and fruit
Seed plants produce a yellow substance that contains sperm cells. What is this yellow substance called? pollen
The seed is protected by an outer covering called a ____? seed coat
Roots know to grow down, while stems and leaves grow up. What is this called? gravitropism
How many cotyledons does a monocot have? 1
How many cotyledons does a dicot have 2
Which kind of plant has flower petals in groups of 3 and parallel veins in the leaves? Monocot
List 2 major accomplishments of George Washington Carver inducted into Hall of Inventors Graduated college made many inventions from the peanut
In what part of the plant does photosynthesis take place? stem, roots, or leaves leaves
What chemical in plant cells makes photosynthesis possible? chlorophyll
Name the 3 reactants that must be present fo make photosynthesis possible. CO2 + H2O + sunlight
Name the 2 products produced from photosynthesis. glucose and oxygen C6H12O6 & O2
If you came across a tall plant in a forest, would you think it was a vascular plant or non-vascular? Explain with 2 support reasons. Vascular. 1) In order for the plant to grow tall it needs the support of vascular tissue. 2) in order for food, water and nutrients to reach all plant parts it needs xylem and phloem tissues.
You find a plant with parallel veins and flowers in groups of 3. What pattern of vascular tissue would you expect to find if you cut through the plant stem? What would you see? scattered pattern with a face! Monocot Man or Monocot Woman
What is the difference between xylem and phloem vascular tissue? Food flows DOWN through phloem tissue. Water and nutrients flow UP through xylem tissue.
What is the chemical equation for phtosynthesis CO2 + H2O + sun's energy = C6H12O6 + O2
Be able to label all parts of the flower... Pistil = stigma, style, ovary, ovule Stamen = anther, filament Flower petal vs Sepal
