Who helped govern France because Louis XIII was a weak king? Cardinal Richelieu
How did Richelieu increase the power of the Bourbon monarchy? He moved against Huguenots to prevent political conspiracies against the Catholic king. He weakened the nobles’ power by forcing them to take down their fortified castles, and increased middle-class government agents power.
What does Cardinal Mazarin do for the young King Louis XIV? He rules the country for King Louis XIV.
Why did many people in France, particularly the nobles, hate Mazarin? Mazarin increased taxes and strengthened the central government.
When Louis takes the throne how does he weaken nobles’ power? He excluded them from his councils and increased intendants’ power.
Who were intendants? Middle class government agents who collected taxes and administered justice.
How did Louis’s support of the arts change the purpose of art? The purpose of art was to glorify the king and promote values that support Louis’s absolute rule.
Between the years of 1667 and 1714, what had France been involved in? What was the result of this involvement? Costly wars; increase in territory, a well trained military, tremendous debt
