Dramatic Conventions
Term | Definition |

Dialogue | Words that the characters speak. |
Stage Directions | Tell the actors how to move and speak, describing the sets and props. |
Dramatic Foil | A character who contrasts with another in a way that highlights the traits of both. |
Aside | A short, quick interjection that reveals inner thoughts of the character for the purpose of informing the audience. It is only meant for the audience, and the other actors "can't" hear it. |
Soliloquoy | A character speaking his thoughts out loud for the audience to hear. The character is or believes he/she is alone. It reveals a character's innermost thoughts. |
Monologue | One character speaks to another at length. |
