“special” triangles | Usually refers to "special" right triangles. These triangles have predictable ratios between all three sides, and sometimes predictable sets of angles. Triangles with sides that are multiples of these ratios also work. (Angles do not scale.) |
list of "special" triangles | 3:4:5, 5:12:13, 30°-60°-90°, 45°-45°-90° |
list of "special" triangles, v2 | 3:4:5, 5:12:13, 1:√3:2, 1:1:√2 |
30°-60°-90° triangle | has sides with ratios 1:√3:2 |
45°-45°-90° triangle | has sides with ratios 1:1:√2 |
means, term definitions | mean, arithmetic mean, and average are all the same |
sum and average relation | 1. Sum of Terms = Number of Terms * Average, 2. Average = Sum of Terms / Number of Terms |
median | the middle term of an odd set put in sequential order, or the average of the two middle terms of an even set put in sequential order. |
mode | the most frequent term of a set |
range | the difference between the greatest term and least term |
Standard deviation | how far apart the numbers in a set are from one another |
Standard deviation, how to calculate | 1. Calculate the mean, 2. Calculate the difference between each value and the mean, 3. Square the differences, 4. Sum the squares, 5. Divide by the number of values, 6. Take the square root. |
Probability, how to calculate | Number of Desired Outcomes / Number of Possible Outcomes |
Probability, how to calculate, steps | Figure out the number of possible outcomes, then figure out the number of desired outcomes. Finally, divide the number of desired outcomes by the number of possible outcomes. |
Probability question strategy | You can often eliminate answer choices on the GRE by having some idea of where the probability of an event falls between 0 and 1. |
