TermDefinition
Constitution The legal structure of a political system, establishing governmental bodies, granting their powers, determining how their members are selected, and prescribing the rules by which they make their decisions. Considered basic or fundamental, a constitution c
Republicanism Government by the representative of the people rather than by the people themselves.
Referenda Proposed laws or constitutional amendments submitted to the voters for their direct approval or rejection, found in state constitutions but not in the US constitution.
Separation of Powers Constitutional division of powers among the three branches of the national government- legislative, judicial, and executive.
checks and balances Constitutional provisions giving each branch of the national government certain checks over the over the actions of the other branches.
Judicial Review Power of the US Supreme Court and federal judiciary to declare laws of congress and the states and actions of the president unconstitutional, therefore legally invalid.
Ratification Power of the legislature to approve or reject the decisions made by the other bodies
Bill of Rights Written guaranties of basic individual liberties: the first 10 amendments to the US constitution.
Enumerated Powers Powers specifically mentioned in the constitution as belonging to the national government.
Amendment Formal changes in a bill, law, or constitution
Equal Rights Amendment Proposed amendment to the constitution guarantying that equal rights under the law shall not be determined by sex
National Supremacy Clause Declares the US constitution to be greater that the constitutions of the states.
Connecticut Compromise One house where every state has equal representation and another where representation is based on population.
