How to communicate in a business setting

| responding | feedback given to the speaker |
| waiting listener | person who waits for cues to take over the speaking turn |
| active listening | the process by which the listener expresses his/her understanding of the speakers total message, including the verbal/nonverbal clutter |
| preoccupied listening | person who listens to other things at the same time |
| evaluating | juding a message in some way |
| understanding | learning what the speaker means |
| remembering | remembering a message |
| self disclosure | communicating info about yourself to another person |
| assertive behavior | behavior that enables you to act in your own best interests w/out denying or infringing on the rights of others |
| self-esteem | the value you place on yourself |
| indiscrimination | a focus on classes of people and things w/out recognizing their uniqueness |
| self-concept | feeling & thoughts about strenghts & weaknesses, abilities & limitations |
| communication | communication is the exchange of information, thoughts, ideas, and feelings. |
| feedback | method that can be used to determine if communication was successful and can be verbal and nonverbal. |
| listening | paying attention to and making and effort to hear what the person is saying. |
| Communicate barrier | something that gets in the way of clear communication. |
| culture | consists of the values, beliefs, attitudes,and customs shared by a group of people and passed on from one generation to the next. |
| stereotype | process of assuming that everyone in a particular group is that same. |
| empathy | identification with and understanding of ,another's situation , feelings or motives |
| jargon | specialized or technical language of trade, a profession, or a group of people. |
| verbal communication | (spoken words) or written words. |
| nonverbal communication | such as facial expressions, body language, gestures, eye contact and touch to convey messages or ideas. |
| sender | individual who creates a message to convey information of an idea to another person. |
| message | information, ideas, or thoughts. |
| receiver | individual who receives that message from the sender. |
