Term | Definition |

Apical | Toward the tip of the root of a tooth |
Buccal | Surface of a tooth facing the cheeks |
Canine tooth | The teeth located just lateral to the incisor teeth |
Coronal | Toward the crown of a tooth |
Crown | The exposed part of a tooth above the gum line |
Dental arch | The complete arched arrangement of upper teeth or lower teeth. Also known as dental arcade |
Distal | For canine, premolar and molar teeth, the surface or edge facing toward the caudal end of the mouth. For the incisor teeth, the surface or edge farthest from the center (midline) |
Furcation | The area where the roots of a multirooted tooth join the crown |
Incisal Edge | The cutting edge of a sharp tooth's crown |
Incisor tooth | The most rostral group of teeth |
Interproximal space | Space overseen adjacent teeth |
Interproximal surface | Surface of a tooth that faces an adjacent tooth |
Labial | Surface of a tooth facing the lips |
Lingual | Surface of a lower tooth facing the lips |
Mesial | For canine, premolar, and molar teeth the surface or edge facing toward the rostral end of the mouth. For the incisor teeth, the surface or edge facing toward the center (midline) |
Molar tooth | The caudal cheek teeth |
Occlusal surface | The flat grinding surface of molar teeth |
Palatal | Surface of an upper tooth facing the hard palate |
Premolar tooth | The rostral cheek teeth |
Quadrant | The right or left half of each dental arch |
Root | The hidden part of a tooth below the gum line |
