New Deal | New Deal definition. A group of government programs and policies established under President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1930s; the New Deal was designed to improve conditions for persons suffering in the Great Depression. |
Barter | Exchange (goods or services) for other goods or services without using money. |
Subsidy | A sum of money granted by the government or a public body to assist an industry or business so that the price of a commodity or service may remain low or competitive. |
Labor Union | An organized association of workers, often in a trade or profession, formed to protect and further their rights and interests. |
Relief | The state of being clearly visible or obvious due to being accentuated in some way. |
Strike | Hit forcibly and deliberately with one's hand or a weapon or other implement. |
Cooperative | Involving mutual assistance in working toward a common goal. |
Recession | A period of temporary economic decline during which trade and industrial activity are reduced, generally identified by a fall in GDP in two successive quarters. |
Minimum Wage | The lowest wage permitted by law or by a special agreement (such as one with a labor union). |
Social Security Act | A law enacted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1935 to create a system of transfer payments in which younger, working people support older, retired people. |
Rural Electrification | The process of bringing electrical power to rural and remote areas. Electricity is used not only for lighting and household purposes, but it also allows for mechanization of many farming operations. |
Civilian Constructive Corps | A public work relief program that operated from 1933 to 1942 in the United States for unemployed, unmarried men from relief families as part of the New Deal. |
