What does an organisation chart show? An Organisational Chart shows the layout of a company
What is the span of control? Span of control shows the number of people overseen by one manager.
What are the two approaches to span of control? Narrow span of control and wide span of control
What is a subordinate? A subordinate is a person directly below a manager
What is the hierarchy? The hierarchy is the number of different levels within an organisational chart. It shows responsibility. Small business will have only 1 or 2 layers but larger business will have many
What is the Chain of Command? The chain of command shows the way decisions are made and orders passed down the levels and information passed up. The person at the top has the most control
What is the difference between a functional and a divisional structure? A divisional structure divides the business by region or product whereas a functional structure divides worker by the type of job they perform e.g. finance, marketing, etc.
What is the difference between a tall and flat structure? Tall = Lots of layers of hierarchy Flat = Very few layers of hierarchy
Explain the difference between a centralised and decentralised organisation Centralised organisations have a head office that provides most of the management whereas a decentralised organisation give regional branches more control and freedom to make their own decisions
State what is meant by motivation? Motivation is the willingness and desire to complete a task
Give examples of how H. Samuel the jewellery store could motivate staff? Provide commissions on the sale of each piece of jewellery, provide bonus payments for the best performing stores, encourage promotion of people within to jewellery store managers, encourage teambuilding exercises for the store staff
Why is do businesses such as British Airways need effective communication? Effective communication stops the wrong information being passed between employees. For BA this could result in customers missing flights or losing luggage. As a result customer service suffers and customers may book with another airline.
Why might internal communication be less formal than external? (internal) Staff communication with each other may not require any evidence to be created. Also, many staff are likely to be friendly to each other and not need to speak formally when discussing issues that are less important.
Why might internal communication be less formal than external? (external) External communication is usually with customers and suppliers so requires a greater degree of formality as they need to create evidence of the communication e.g. letters or invoices.
What are examples of time based remuneration? Wages Overtime Salaries
What are examples of reward based remuneration? Piece rate pay (pay per item or service provided) Commission Bonus Payments Performance related pay
State examples of fringe benefits? Discounts on the businesses products, a company car, discounted meals, free/cheap childcare, pension schemes
What is the difference between a freelance worker and a temporary worker? Freelance = A work NOT employed by the business but who provides services for a fee Temporary = A worker that IS employed but on a SHORT TERM CONTRACT
