| margin call | demand by a broker that investors pay back loans made for stocks purchased on margin |
| bank run | persistent & heavy demands by a bank's depositors, creditors, or customers to withdraw money |
| installment | regular periodic payment to pay off the cost of an item when buying it on credit |
| baliff | minor officer of the courts |
| hobo | a homeless and usually penniless wanderer |
| soap opera | a serial drama on television or radio using melodramatic situations |
| public works | projects such as highways, parks, & libraries built w public funds for public use |
| relief | aid in the form of money or supplies for those in need |
| foreclose | to take possession of a property from a mortgager because of defaults on payments |
| polio | abbreviated term for poliomyelitis, an acute infectious disease affecting the skeletal muscles, often resulting in permanent disability & deformity |

| binding arbitration | process in which a neutral party hears arguments from two opposing sides and makes a decision that both must accept |
| sit-down strike | method of boycotting work by sitting down at work & refusing to leave the establishment |
| court-packing | the act of a leader to change the political balance of power in a nation's judiciary system by appointing judges who will rule in favor of his or her policies |

| broker state | role of government to work out conflicts among competing interest groups |
