Anne Frank additional study guide questions

Summarize the information about the diary, found in the first paragraph of the introduction. Anne Frank's diary was found at the end of WWII (1945) in a pile of rubbish in the old warehouse in Amsterdam, Holland. Anne had kept it for 25 months.
Where and why was Anne's family in hiding? They were escaping the Nazi invasion. They moved from Germany to the Netherlands (Holland). In July 1942, they went into hiding in a secret attic apartment. It was on the top floor of a building Mr. Frank had used as a warehouse and business office.
Define persecute. verb - to harrass in a manner designed to injure, grieve, or afflict; to cause to suffer because of a belief
Copy the last line which Anne wrote in her diary as given in the introduction, and explain what you know about her character because of these words. in spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart. These words describe Anne as very optimistic and forgiving. She can see the good in all situations.

ACT 1, SCENE 2 Describe Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan. What assumptions can you make about their backgrounds simply from these descriptions? Mrs. Van Daan bring her fur coat, hats, etc, into hiding. Mr. Van Daan smokes constantly and wears expensive clothing. We can assume that they are very wealthy.
Define Star of David It is a symbol of Judaism. The Jews were forced by the Nazis to wear one on all of their clothing.
Identify Green Police The Green Police was another name for the Nazis because they wore green uniforms.
Identify ration books. The ration books were used during wartime to distribute food, clothing, and gasoline evenly among everyone. Nothing could be bought without ration cards.
Who (2 people) help the Franks and Van Daans by being an outside source? Miep and Mr. Kraler help the Franks and Van Daans.
List at least 3 precautions they must take not to be discovered. #1 They can't speak above a whisper from 8 am to 6 pm because the workmen arrive at 8:30 am and leave at 5:30.

What do we learn about Mr. Frank's relationship with Mr. Van Daan? When Mr. Frank came to Holland, Mr. Van Daan helped him. Mr. Frank knew no one and couldn't speak Dutch.
The dialogue between Anne and Peter reveals how different they are. Explain these differences. Anne is very carefree, immature, and fickle. Peter is more serious and mature.
Anne says that she is going to think of this place as a ?. What does this reveal about her character? summer boarding house. This reveals she thinks that this is going to be like vacation and that it won't last long. She is being naive and immature.
List 2 things which Anne's father reminds her of to try to appease her. - #1 No one can put a bolt or lock on your mind.

ACT 1, SCENE 3 Describe the small differences you see in Peter's personality at the beginning of this scene. Peter has begun to loosen up and he starts to joke with Anne
How does Anne react to Peter's joke? What does this reveal about her? Anne gets angry when Peter calls her Mrs. Quack Quack. She is immature and doesn't like being teased, but likes to tease others.
What does the dialogue between Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan reveal about these two? Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan argue a lot and try to make each other angry. They argue over Peter, Mr. Van Daan's smoking, and Mrs. Van Daan's recollections of the past. They do not get along very well.
Describe the dialogue between Mr. Van Daan and Anne Anne and Mr. Van Daan argue. Mr. Van Daan says that Anne talks continously and never shuts up. He tells her she is spoiled and that she needs a spanking.
