Biology Vocabulary

7TH GRADE Biology; General biology vocabulary

TermDefinition
Autotroph An organism that makes its own food.
Heterotroph An organism that cannot make its own food.
Asexual reproduction The reproductive process that involves only one parent and produces fertile offspring that are identical to the parent.
Sexual reproduction The reproductive process that involves two parents who combine their genetic material to produce a new organism, which differs from both parents.
Binary fission A form of asexual reproduction in which one cell divides to form two identical cells.
Conjugation The process in which a unicellular organism transfers some of its genetic material to another unicellular organism.
Decomposers An organism that breaks down large chemicals to small chemicals and returns important materials to the soil and water.
Multicellular Multiple cells
Unicellular One cell
Prokaryote Lacks a nucleus
Eukaryote Contains a nucleus
Stimulus A change in an organisms surroundings that causes the organism to react.
Response An action or change in behavior that occurs as a result of a stimulus.
