Term | Definition |

Allemande | Moderately fast. Simple quadruple time. Short anacrusis. Continuous movement. First movement of a suite. |
Courante | Fast. Simple triple. Short anacrusis. Italian style: continuous movement. French style: varied rhythm, sometimes changing from 3/2 to 6/4 at the cadence point in each half |
Minuet | Moderate speed. Simple triple. No anacrusis. Graceful. |
Sarabande | Slow. Simple triple. No anacrusis. Stately. Often ornamented with 2nd beat accented. |
Gavotte | Moderately fast. Simple duple or quadruple. Half-bar anacrusis. Rhythmic, sprightly. |
Gigue | Fast. Compound duple. Usually a short anacrusis. Often contrapuntal, usually the last movement of a suite. |
