Grade 4 Musicianship

Classical or Baroque Dance Suite

TermDefinition
Allemande Moderately fast. Simple quadruple time. Short anacrusis. Continuous movement First movement of a suite.
Courante Fast. Simple triple. Short anacrusis. Italian style: continuous movement. French style: varied rhythm, sometimes changing from 3/2 to 6/4 at the cadence point in each half
Minuet Moderate speed. Simple triple. No anacrusis. Graceful.
Sarabande Slow. Simple triple. No anacrusis. Stately. Often ornamented with 2nd beat accented.
Gavotte Moderately fast. Simple duple or quadruple. Half-bar anacrusis. Rhythmic, sprightly.
Gigue Fast. Compound duple. Usually a short anacrusis. Often contrapuntal, usually the last movement of a suite.
