TermDefinition
Main Idea The author's central thought; the chief topic of a text expressed or implied in a word or phrase; the topic sentence of a paragraph.
Metaphor The comparison of two unlike things in which no words of comparison are used.
Narrative Writing Writing that conveys experiences, either real or imaginary, using a sequence of events s its structure. Its purpose might be o inform, persuade, or entertain.
Opinion A personal view, attitude, or appraisal.
Organizational Strategy The writer's method of organizing text.
Personification An object or abstract idea given human qualities or human form.
Problem and Solution A type of text structure in which a difficulty is identified and resolutions are proposed.
Pronoun A word that takes the place of a noun.
Rhyme The repetition of an identical or similarly accented sound or sounds in a work.
Sensory Language Details that involve one or more of the five senses; writers use sensory language to create a strong impression on readers.
Simile A comparison of two unlike things in which a word of comparison is used.
Stanza An arrangement of lines of verse in a pattern usually repeated throughout a poem. Usually, each stanza has a fixed number of verses or lines, an overall meter, an a consistent rhyme scheme.
Structure How information within a text is organized.
Summarize To capture all of the most important parts if the original text but express them in a much shorter space and as much as possible in the reader's own words.
Synonym A word that is similar in meaning to another word.
Text Feature Print features as well as graphic, informational, and organizational aids.
Tone (Reading) The attitude of the author toward the audience, the characters, the subject, or the work itself.
Tone (Writing) As established by the writer, the attitude that is expressed toward the audience and topic through a piece of writing.
