ECE3-03 Communication and Language Development

TermDefinition
Infant communcation from birth, through sounds (crying, cooing, squealing), facial expressions (eye contact, smiling, grimacing) and gestures/body movements (moving legs in excitement or distress, and later, gestures like pointing.)
Caregiver as Tour Guide Parents and caregivers can create a “tour guide” running commentary about what the child is doing or what the parent is doing.
Shared Attention It is achieved when one individual alerts another to an object by means of eye-gazing, pointing or other verbal or non-verbal indications.
Games with Infants (such as peek a boo) Fun activities to bond with baby and help them reach physical, social, and cognitive milestones.
Motor Imitation/Verbal tasks Motor imitation refers to the ability or task of mimicking and reproducing the movements of another person. Verbal tasks similarly offer babies the opportunity to learn how to make different sounds by attempting to imitate caregivers
Sound imitation with movement The sounds that you use during play should be made simultaneously with an action or movement
Importance of Reading to babies/toddlers Reading, storytelling, talking and singing with your baby helps her learn about sounds, words and language. It also creates pathways in the brain.
Quality Children's Book illustrations that are engaging, varied and colorful . a story that teaches a concept or value. elements of pattern, rhyme and repetition.
Critical Periods The scientific idea that children only have a certain time frame to learn particular skills and knowledge.
Active Listening the act of making eye contact, responding with facial expressions in order to engage and encourage continued communication
Feral Children Children who are not raised by humans
