Inequalities and Equations
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Inequality | an open sentence that uses the symbol <, >, less than or equal to, or greater than or equal to to compare two quantities. |
Solution to an Inequality | a value of the variable that makes an inequality true; a possible answer |
Solution to an Equation | a value of the variable that makes an equation true; the answer to an equation |
Special Case | when multiplying or dividing an inequality by a negative number, flip the inequality symbol |
Standard Form of an Expression | an expression in simplest terms; all like terms are combined |
Solution Set | the set of numbers that make an inequality true; all of the possible answers to an inequality |
Let Statement | defines the variable in an expression, equation, or inequality; for example, let x = number of months |
Key Words that Indicate Greater Than | more than, over, above, exceeds |
Key Words that Indicate Less Than | under, below, fewer than |
Key Words that Indicate Greater Than or Equal To | minimum, no less than, at least |
Key Words that Indicate Less Than or Equal To | maximum, no more than, at most |
