Inequalities and Equations

TermDefinition
Inequality an open sentence that uses the symbol <, >, less than or equal to, or greater than or equal to to compare two quantities.
Solution to an Inequality a value of the variable that makes an inequality true; a possible answer
Solution to an Equation a value of the variable that makes an equation true; the answer to an equation
Special Case when multiplying or dividing an inequality by a negative number, flip the inequality symbol
Standard Form of an Expression an expression in simplest terms; all like terms are combined
Solution Set the set of numbers that make an inequality true; all of the possible answers to an inequality
Let Statement defines the variable in an expression, equation, or inequality; for example, let x = number of months
Key Words that Indicate Greater Than more than, over, above, exceeds
Key Words that Indicate Less Than under, below, fewer than
Key Words that Indicate Greater Than or Equal To minimum, no less than, at least
Key Words that Indicate Less Than or Equal To maximum, no more than, at most
