Understanding the Stages in the Family Life Cycle
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Beginning Stage | A couple marries, starts a home, develop careers, and learn to get along as husband and wife. |
Child Bearing Stage | The couple decides to have a child. They adjust in their role as parents, with changing demands on time, finances and freedom. |
Parenting Stage | The first child begins school. Changes in schedules occur with school events and activities. The teen becomes more involved with social life and developing independence. |
Launching Stage | Begins when the first child leaves home. Parents have more space at home and more freedom. |
Mid-Years or Empty Nest Stage | When the last child leaves home parents may continue work until they retire. They may explore their personal interest and their income may become higher. |
Aging Stage | This stage last until both spouses die. They may enjoy lifelong interests. As they age help from family members with transportation, meals, medicine, and financial issues. |
Life Change | Any event that causes significant change in the way you manage your life. |
Examples of Family Challenges | Unemployment,Relocation, Financial Crises, Divorce, Remarriage, Health Crises, Death, Substance Abuse, and Family Violence. |
Stages of Grief | Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance |
