Review - Lab Safety

If there is a spill, something breaks, someone is injured, or a fire breaks out you should notify the teacher immediately
When handling animals... Only open cages with permission Never handle animals when teacher is out of room Do not tease or play roughly with animals Keep animals away from students' faces Report any bite or scratch from the animal immediately
Always carry a microscope with ... both hands. One hand is on the arm and one is under the base.
Horseplay, practical jokes and pranks are never "ok" in the lab
Perform only authorized ("ok-ed" by the teacher) experiments. Do not conduct any experiment when the teacher is out of the room.
Wear safety goggles when using glass, heat, chemicals, and projectiles
Hot or broken glassware should never be picked up by bare hands
Long hair must be tied up for labs
Dangling jewerly and baggy loose clothing are not permitted in the lab
Chemicals, equipment, supplies, or animals are not to be moved from the Science lab without permission from the teacher.
When dissecting do not remove specimens from the lab use scaples, scissors, and other sharp instruments only as instructed Never cut toward youself, but AWAY Report any cut or scratches from sharp instrument to the teacher immediately
All chemicals in the lab (including foodstuffs and store bought chemicals - baking soda and vinegar) should be treated as hazardous
Work areas should be kept clean and tidy (free from clutter)
Do leave a bunsen burner lit and unattended
Do not bring backpacks, purses, or jackets to the lab
Students are not allowed in storage closet or cabinets in the lab
Always wait to start a lab for the teachers instructions. Do not touch any equipment until told to do so.
Never eat, drink, chew gum, or taste anything in the science room
The safe way to "smell" a substance is to Waft the smell by waving your hand over the container toward your nose.
Follow your teacher's instructions on how to dispose of waste materials used during the lab
Before leaving the Lab, ... Clean your work area and equipment return all equipment to the proper storage area wash your hands with soap and water
If you do not understand the directions ask the teacher for further information before proceeding (going on) with the experiment.
Open toed shoes (sandals or flip flops) are not allowed in the lab.
Read all the procedures (instructions) before beginning a lab
