ICT Computer Basics

Hardware, Storage Devices, Software, and File Management Vocab

TermDefinition
Application Computer software created to allow the user to perform specific job or task.
Database Software that utilizes a collection of related information organized in a manner that allows for rapid search and retrieval.
Desktop Publishing Software that is used to enhance the layout and design of a document.
File Management A program on a computer that provides tools and allows the user to search for, manage, create, edit, view, print, rename, copy, or delete files or folders.
Folder A container used to store, manage, and organize files.
Hardware The physical components (machine, wires, etc.) that make up the system unit plus the peripheral devices connected to it.
Input Device Enters data and commands into the computer.
Output Device Allows the user to view or listen to the data a computer processes.
Peripherals Any device connected to the outside of the system unit that are not necessary for a computer to function, but does enhance how the computer can be used.
Presentation Computer software that is used to organize and present information, normally in the form of a slide show.
Save To store data to access at a later time.
Save As A feature that allows you to change the attributes of a file (such as location, file name, or file type) before saving it.
Software Instructions (programs) for controlling the computer.
Spreadsheet Software that uses a grid with columns and rows; it is used to evaluate, calculate, manipulate, analyze, and present data (text, formulas, and numbers/values).
Storage Device External hardware that is used to store and retrieve data, instructions, and information.
Word Processing Software that is used to create, edit, and print documents and then save them electronically.
