QuestionAnswer
What are observations? Evaluating an object using a) five senses: seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, smelling b) instruments: ruler, stopwatch, thermometer, scale, etc.
What are inferences? Educated guesses or predictions based on observations
What is classification? Organizing observations in a meaningful way (Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species)
What is measurement? Observations made with an instrument consisting of a number and a unit
What is the difference between mass and weight? a) Mass: how much matter in an object (does not change) b) Weight: object's gravitational pull (varies according to place)
What is scientific notation? An easier way to express very large or very small numbers (ex. 20,000,000 = 2.0 * 10^7)
What do graphs show? Graphs show relationships between 2 variables
What is a direct relationship? a) Both variables increase b) Both variables decrease c) Straight line slants upwards
What is an indirect relationship? a) One variable increases and another decreases b) Straight line slants downwards
What is a cyclic graph? a) A series of events that repeat themselves at regular intervals (ex. seasons, sunrise + sunset, moon phases) b) Moon Phase Cycles Most earth changes are cyclical
What is the rate of change? An equation that measures how fast something is happening: change in field value/time (field value = measured)
What is density? Compactness of an object
What is the formula for density? D = m / v
