Pattern Symbols
Identify pattern symbols and their use.
Term | Definition |
---|---|
A line with an arrow at each end. | Grainline is used to place the pattern on the material so that the symbol is parallel to the selvage |
A line with an arrow at each end. The arrow is bent at each end | Place on the fold. Cuts one whole piece instead of 2 separate pieces. |
Broken line | Line that you sew on. |
Solid black line on the edge of the pattern | The cutting line. |
Notches | Diamond shaped markings found on the cutting line of the pattern piece; used to match pieces or indicate openings. Cut around them. |
Dots and squares | Used to match pattern pieces or indicate an opening. |
Seam allowance | The space between the cutting line and the sewing line. |
Selvage | The two edges of the fabric that are the closely woven edge of the fabric that do not ravel. |
Backstitch | Reverse stitching at the beginning and the end of the seam to prevent the seam from pulling out. |
Perpendicular | Straight pins should be placed this direction to the stitching line. |
Dart | A folded wedge of fabric that is tapered and stitched down to give shape to a garment. |
Alterations | Two lines that indicate to shorten or lengthen a pattern at this point. |
