What country did Marco Polo explore for? He did not sail for any country. He left Venice with his father and uncle for China to meet with Kublai Khan.
Why did Marco Polo explore? He and his father and uncle had initially left Venice to meet and trade with Kublai Khan. However, after a mishap, He explored purely for the sake of exploration, as well as knowledge.
What was Marco Polo's claim to fame? While he was a prisoner of war during the Venice/Genoa war, He wrote his book titled "The Travels of _____". This book described China in great detail, which caused many Europeans to grow curious about trading with Asia via the Silk Road.
What country did Bartholomeu Dias explore for? He explored for Portugal.
Why did Bartholomeu Dias explore? He wanted to trade with Asia.
What was Bartholomeu Dias's claim to faim? He was the first European to round the tip of Africa. He also named it the "Cape of Good Hope".
What country did Christopher Columbus explore for? He explored for Spain.
Why did Christopher Columbus explore? He learned about Asia from "The Travels of Marco Polo" and wanted to trade with Asia, specifically India. This would make him very wealthy, had he succeeded.
What was Christopher Columbus's claim to fame? He was the first European to discover the New World.
What country did Vasco da Gama explore for? He explored for Portugal.
Why did Vasco da Gama explore? He wanted to find a trade route to India.
What was Vasco da Gama's claim to fame? He was the first European to sail around Africa AND CONTINUE ON TO INDIA.
What country did Amerigo Vespucci explore for? He explored for Spain.
Why did Amerigo Vespucci explore? He wanted to locate a star that he thought was above the South Pole, as there was one above the North Pole.
What was Amerigo Vespucci's claim to fame? North and South America were named after him. This is because he discovered that Columbus was wrong about "India" and that the Americas were nowhere near Asia.
What country did John Cabot explore for? He explored for England.
What country did Vasco Nunez de Balboa explore for? He explored for Spain.
Why did Vasco Nunez de Balboa explore? He was inspired by Columbus to explore the New World and also wanted to establish a stable settlement in South America.
What was Vasco Nunez de Balboa's claim to fame? He crossed the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific Ocean.
What country did Juan Ponce de Leon explore for? He explored for Spain.
Why did Juan Ponce de Leon explore? He wanted to find the Fountain of Youth and wealth.
What was Juan Ponce de Leon's claim to fame? He founded and claimed Florida for Spain.
What country did Ferdinand Magellan explore for? He explored for Spain.
Why did Ferdinand Magellan explore? He wanted to find a westward route to the Maluku Islands/Spice Islands.
What was Ferdinand Magellan's claim to fame? He was the first explorer to complete a circumnavigation of the earth (note: he died before he could finish the journey; only his crew completed his goal).

Why did Henry Hudson explore? He wanted to find trade routes to the Orient, such as the Northwest Passage.
What was Henry Hudson's claim to fame? He founded New York, the Hudson Bay, and the Hudson River.
