Lesson 1 Structure of Earth
Term | Definition |
---|---|
earth | composed of three main layers; the crust, the mantle, and the core |
crust | Earth's solid, outer layer is made of granite, basalt, gabbro, and other types of rock |
mantle | the molten, middle layer of the Earth consists of silica and metal-rich minerals |
core | has two layers; the outer core (mostly liquid iron) and the inner core (mostly solid iron); extreme heat and pressure are characteristics |
theory of plate tectonics | the theory which explains the phenomena of the Earth's crust: seafloor spreading, the formations of major landforms, and the movement of continents |
tectonic plates | chunks of the Earth's crust that fit together like puzzle pieces (They move up to 6 inches a year.) |
margins | tectonic plate boundaries |
constructive margin | one of 3 types of margins; two plates are moving apart and new crust is fomring |
destructive margin | one of 3 types of margins; two plates are colliding and crust is being destroyed |
transform (or conservative) margin | one of 3 types of margins; two plates are sliding by one another, and no crust is created or destroyed |
