Lesson 1 Structure of Earth

earth composed of three main layers; the crust, the mantle, and the core
crust Earth's solid, outer layer is made of granite, basalt, gabbro, and other types of rock
mantle the molten, middle layer of the Earth consists of silica and metal-rich minerals
core has two layers; the outer core (mostly liquid iron) and the inner core (mostly solid iron); extreme heat and pressure are characteristics
theory of plate tectonics the theory which explains the phenomena of the Earth's crust: seafloor spreading, the formations of major landforms, and the movement of continents
tectonic plates chunks of the Earth's crust that fit together like puzzle pieces (They move up to 6 inches a year.)
margins tectonic plate boundaries
constructive margin one of 3 types of margins; two plates are moving apart and new crust is fomring
destructive margin one of 3 types of margins; two plates are colliding and crust is being destroyed
transform (or conservative) margin one of 3 types of margins; two plates are sliding by one another, and no crust is created or destroyed
