What are the elements of design? color, texture, shape/ form, lines, space
What are the principles of design? balance, rhythm, proportion/ scale, emphasis, unity
What is the principle repetition? repeating something
How does texture affect color? rough textures look darker than smooth because it absorbs more light than smooth
What do curved lines suggest? natural, delicate, comfort
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? 1) left and right parts are equal 2) top and bottom parts are equal 3) when elements radiate outwards from the center
What do diagonal lines suggest? movement
What is space? any kind of room with any of the elements or principles being displayed in it
What are the four types of rhythm? gradation, radiation, repetition, continuous line
What is asymmetrical balance? Example? when parts of the design are not identical but are equal in vision example: shelves with different sized items on them
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? 1) relaxing, wide, calm 2) formal, strength, stable, length and height
What is the golden mean? 3:5 ratio
What is the difference between shape and form? shape has height and width form has height, width and depth
What are the five types of balance? symmetrical, asymmetrical, vertical, horizontal, radial
What does unity or harmony mean? all elements and principles of design work together to create harmony
What are the two things texture involves? the way a surface feels when you touch it, or think that it feels
What are the four types of line? vertical, horizontal, diagonal, curved
What is proportion? tells how the design is visually divided
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? radial
What is symmetrical balance? Example? when both parts are identical
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? - one object or item stands out - another name is focal point
What happens when you use a continuous line? your eye follows the way the line is going
What is another name for symmetrical balance? formal balance
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? informal balance
What is the difference between gradation and radiation? - consistent except for one thing - has to move from the center out
