Vocab/concepts Egypt

TermDefinition
cataracts strong rapids- The Nile rushed through rocky, hilly land south of Egypt. At several points, this caused strong rapids to form.
delta a triangle -shaped area of land made up of soil deposited by a river-In ancient times, swamps and marshes covered much of this area in the Nile River.
pharaoh a title used by the rulers/gods of Egypt-Menes was the first and he united Upper and Lower Egypt.
dynasty a series of rulers from the same family
Old Kingdom a period in Egyptian history that lasted from about 2700 BC to 2200 BC. Many great pyramids were built during this time
Khufu The most famous pharaoh of the Old Kingdom-He is best know for the many famous monuments that were built to honor him. Historical records tell us that the people who worked for him were well fed.
Osiris Egyptian god of the underworld
Isis Egyptian goddess of magic
Anubis Egyptian god of the dead-human body and Jackal's head
mummies embalmed bodies wrapped in cloth-This process kept the ka from suffering and allowed the ka to recognize the body
Middle Kingdom a period of Egyptian history marked by order and stability. It lasted until about 1750 BC
New Kingdom a period of Egyptian history during which Egypt reached the height of its power and glory. It lasted from about 1550 BC to 1050 BC. Conquest and trade brought great wealth to the pharaohs
Ramses the Great This pharaoh was one of the longest rulers in Egyptian history. He created a strong army to fight the Hittites and built a temple with four statues of himself at Abu Simbel.
Hatshepsut This ruling queen worked to increase Egyptian trade. She is also built many monuments and temples during her reign.
papyrus a long lasting paper- like material made from reeds that grew along the Nile
hieroglyphics Egyptian writing system-pictures were used to represent sounds
Rosetta Stone stone slab inscribed with hieroglyphics, discovered by a French soldier in 1799-it provided historians with the key to decoding/reading hieroglyphics
sphinxes imaginary creatures with the bodies of lions and the heads of other animals of humans
obelisk a tall four-sided pillar that is pointed on top
King Tutankhamen the "Boy King" His tomb was discovered undisturbed in 1922 by Howard Carter. The tomb treasures have taught us much about Egyptians burial practices and beliefs
