Government Institution by which a society makes and enforces its public policies
Public policies All the many goals a government decides to do to help its citizens
Legislative power Power to make laws
Executive power Power to enforce laws
Constitution Fundamental laws that outline the principles, structures and processes of a government
Dictatorship Power held by a single person or a small group
Democracy Supreme authority is with the people ( people hold the power)
State A body of people living in a territory, that is organized politically and has the power to make and enforce laws without the consent of a higher authority
Sovereign Supreme and absolute power
Autocracy Government where a single person holds unlimited power
Oligarchy Government where the power to rule is held by a small, elite
Unitary government All powers are held by the government and belongs to a single agency
Federal government Powers of government are divided between a central and several local governments
Division of power Government powers are divided on a geographic basis
Confederation Alliance of independent states
Presidential government Separation of powers between executive, and legislative branches
Parliamentary government A government where the executive branch is made up of a prime minister and minister's cabinet
Majority rule The majority of people will be right more often than wrong in a democracy
Comprimise Blending and adjusting opposing views
Citizen A person who holds both rights and responsibilities in a state
Free enterprise system A system that is characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods and investments are determined by private decision
