AMEB Grade 4 - Terms and Definitions
Term | Definition |

Allemande | First dance in suite, country of origin- Germany, moderate tempo, 4/4, continuous movement. Often begins with an anacruisis. |
Courante - type 1 | Second dance in suite, country of origin- France, moderate tempo, 3/2 or 6/4, a running dance with anacruisis and frequent changes of rhythm. |
Courante - type 2 | Second dance in suite, country of origin- Italy, quick tempo, 3/4 or 3/8, continuous running movement with anacruisis. |
Sarabande | Third dance in suite, country of origin- Spain, slow tempo, 3/2 or 3/4. Stately, dignified dance, often having emphasis on 2nd beat. |
Minuet | Between sarabande (3) and gigue (5), country of origin- France, moderate tempo, 3/4, graceful. |
Gavotte | Between sarabande (3) and gigue (5), country of origin- France, moderate tempo, 4/4 or 2/2. Buoyant rhythm; begins and ends at the half bar, |
Gigue | Final dance in suite, country of origin- England, France, fast, usually 3/8, 6/8 or 12/8, fugal writing, usually with short anacruisis. |
