Weathering/Erosion
Erosion and Deposton/Mass Movement and Glaciers anuemeyer6
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is Erosion? | process by which natural forces move weathered rock and soil or sediment from one place to another; factors that effect rate of erosion include- climate, weather, topography and the type of rock. |
What is Deposition? | Laying or settling down of eroded material |
What is Mass Wasting? | Down hill movement of a large mass of rocks or soil because of the pull of gravity; Examples are- mudslides, landslides, slump, and creep |
What is a Glacier? | Large mass of ice that formed on land and moves slowly across Earth's surface; forms in areas where snowfall is greater than the amount of snow melt |
What is a Continental Glacier ( ice sheet)? | Covers large areas of land and move outward from central location; exist today on Antarctica and Greenland |
What is a Valley Glacier (alpine)? | Long, narrow glacier that forms when snow and ice build up high in a mountain valley |
What is Plucking? | A process which glaciers erode land; As a glacier flows over the land, it picks up rocks and large boulders, dragging them across land, causing abrasions, or gouges and scratches in the bed rock |
What is Till? | Landform created by eroded sediment; mixture of sediment that is deposited directly on the surface |
What is Moraine? | Landform created by eroded sediment; ridge formed from till deposits at the edge of glaciers |
What is Kettle? | Landform created by eroded sediment; small depression that forms when a chunk of ice is left in till then evantually melts |
