* Oral contraceptives should be discontinued at least 4 weeks prior to any surgical procedure to reduce the risk of post operative thromboembolic complications *Pregnacy usually continues for 38weeks after conception.
*Post-menopausal pt's who are on long term estrogen therapy should be given progestin too, to prevent endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial carcinoma. *Progestin is not given to women who have had a hysterectomy
*Androgen Therapy*
Main indications in men- they are used to supplement low levels of testostrone to correct hypogonadism(abnormaly decrese gonadal function that results in retarted sexual development) Also used for cryptorchidism (undesended testicals) & to increase sperm production in casses of infertility.
** Indications in women**
Palliative treatment of metistatic brease cancer (spreding)(they cannot do anything but try to releive their symptoms but cant do any thing to cure the cancer Treatment of post pardom breast engorgment, endometriosis,and fibrocystic breast desorder. They are also used to stimulate increased production of red blood cells, protien synthesis, and muscle mass
*these are known as anabolic steroids II*Athletes may use Androgens to improve their athletic performance.* * If pregnat women use testostrone it can cause masculinization of the fetus. (contraindicated during pregnacy)
