Veterinary Health Care Team Members
Term | Definition |

Students | observers or hold paid positions in the hospital. Can be high school students or vet assistants or techs enrolled in course work for an externship. |
groomers | perform technical skill requiring patience. Train through the National Dog Groomers Association. |
Kennel Assistants | aka animal care attendants. Keep patients clean and alert the team of changes in patient status. Receive on the job training . |
Veterinary Assistants | help veterinary technician or veterinarian.Should excel at restraint, lab skills, patient care and client relations.Trained through OJT or accredited school and receive an AVA.Governed byNational Association of Veterinary Technicians in America |
Veterinary Technician | credentialed tech graduated 2 year Vet Tech program by AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association). Pass national and state boards. allowed to perform duties under direct supervision of vet. |
Veterinary Technologists | graduate of 4 year BS program in vet tech accredited by AVMA or 2 year program with a bachelor's degree in another program. Responsible for overseeing vet techs, assistants and kennel personnel. |
Receptionists | face of vet practice. Greet clients, detail and clarify invoices, receive money, answer phone, schedule appts. |
Office manager | responsible for overseeing front office staff and training receptionists. |
Veterinarian | only member of team allowed to diagnose, prescribe medication or perform surgery on patients. Completed 4 year school of AVMA accredited veterinary medicine and pass state and national boards. |
practice managers | keeps the team working together and often reports to hospital administrator. Handle client and personnel issues, supervise training sessions and hold team members accountable for their actions. |
hospital administrators | may be veterinarian, technician or business manager. Has complete authority over the operation of the business and practice. Sets budgets, pays bills, creates organizing structure and plans events. |
AVMA | American Veterinary Medical Association; organization developed to improve and set standards for veterinary medicine |
NAVTA | National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America; non profit organization dedicated to improving the knowledge and professionalism of veterinary technicians. |
Veterinary Practice Act | law established within each state outlining veterinary medicine |
VSPN | The Veterinary Support Personnel Network; an outline, veterinary support staff working with for or in the field of veterinary medicine under the direction of a licensed veterinarian. |
VTNE | The Veterinary Technician National Examination; national exam administerd to those who have graduated from and AVMA accredited school and who wish receive credentials within the state they wish to practice. |
