The Body Systems
System | Major Components | Principal Functions |
---|---|---|
Muscular | Skeletal muscles | Movement, posture, heat. |
Skeletal | Skeleton (bones, tendons, ligaments, cartilage) | Support and protection; red bone marrow produces blood cells, yellow bone marrow stores lipids. stores minerals. |
Nervous | Brain, spinal cord, nerves, sensory organs. | Detects stimuli and produces nerve impulses to regulate body activities (sensory, integrative and motor functions) |
Endocrine | Pituitary, thyroid, pancreas, adrenal, and other hormone secreting glands. | Releases hormones to regulate body activities (eg, insulin) |
Lymphatic and Immune | Bone marrow, lymph nodes, thymus, spleen, lymph vessels, white blood cells | Defense; transport of lipids, proteins, lymphoid cells and fluid. |
Cardiovascular/Circulatory | Heart, blood vessels, blood. | Transport of oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients and waste; regulation of water content, temperature and acid-base balance; defence. |
Respiratory | Lungs, trachea, other breathing tubes | Transfer of oxygen and carbon dioxide between blood and air, vocalization, acid-base regulation. |
Digestive | Mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, anus. | Digestion of food, absorbtion of nutrients, elimination of solid waste |
Urinary/Excretory | Kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra. | Urine production, storage and elimination; regulation of blood volume; assists in production of blood cells. Acid-base balance. |
Reproductive | Ovaries or testes and associated organs. | Prodution, storage and transport of gametes (sperm or oocytes); hormones regulate a number of body processes. |
Integumentary | Skin and its derivatives (hair, claws, skin glands) | Protects against infection and drying out, thermoregulates, detects sensations, vitamin D synthesis. |
