| Laissez-faire | a policy or attitude of letting things take their own course, without interfering |
| Majority Rule | the principle that the greater number should exercise greater power |
| Caucus | a meeting of party leaders to select candidates |
| Writ of Habeus-Corpus | a court order to a person or agency holding someone in custody to deliver the imprisoned individual to the court issuing the order |
| Social Contract Theory | organized society is brought into being and invested with the right to secure mutual protection and welfare or to regulate the relations among its members |
| Federalist Papers | series of eighty-five essays written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay in the late 1780s to persuade the voters of New York to adopt the Constitution. |
