SLP AUD scope of counseling (2) 1.Personal adjustment and 2.informational counseling rather than professional psychotherapy. (Goal & task accomplishment, minor personal concerns, not mental health.)
2-way personal adjustment counseling 1.Help to tell their story 2.Help to clarify their problems 3.Help to take responsibility for listening problems 4.Help to establish their own goals 5.Develop an action plan 6.Implement the plan 7.Ongoing evaluation
Telling their story -Be wary of “habituation” (heard it all before and know the patient’s story) -Avoid “I understand” -Use self-assessment instrument (always to never) -Allow time to expand on self-assessment items
Clarifying their story -Children w/ HL have difficulty expressing language; -use questionnaire as means to clarify feelings (ex., Abbreviated Profile of Hearing Aid Benefit, APHAB)
Adults w/HL motivation spectrum 1/3 high; 1/3 unsure; 1/3 non-motivated. Need to make emotional connection w/communication problems. (Request examples of recent breakdowns.)
