Bureaucracy | A large,complex organization in which employees have specific job responsibilities and work within a hierarchy of authority. |
Departments | The biggest units of the executive branch,covering broad area of government responsibility. The heads of the departments, or secretaries, form the president's cabinet. |
Regulatory Commissions | Agencies of the executive branch of government that control or direct some aspect of the economy. |
Civil Services | The system by which most appointments to the federal bureaucracy are made, to ensure that government jobs are filled on the basis of merit and that employees are not fired for political reasons. |
Rule Making | The administrative process that results in the issuance of regulations by government agencies. |
Incrementalism | Policymaking characterized by a series of decisions, each typically institution modest change. |
Implementation | The process of putting specific policies into operation. |
Deregulation | A bureaucratic reform by which the government reduces its role as a regular of business. |
Government Performance and Results Act | A law requiring each government agency to implement quantifiable standards to measure its performance in meeting stated program goals. |
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) | The EPA is an agency of the United States federal government whose mission is to protect human and environmental health. |
Social Security | any government system that provides monetary assistance to people with an inadequate or no income. (in the US) a federal insurance program that provides benefits to retired people and those who are unemployed or disabled. |
Bureaucrat | Employees of a bureaucracy, usually meaning a government bureaucracy. |
Independent Agency | Executive agencies that are not part of a cabinet department. |
Government Corporation | Government agencies that perform services that might be provided by the private sector but that either involve insufficient financial incentive or are better provided when they are somehow linked with government. |
Administrative Discretion | The latitude that Congress gives agencies to make policy in the spirit of their legislative mandate. |
Regulations | Administrative rules that guide the operation of a government program. |
Norms | An organization's informal, unwritten rules that guide individual behavior. |
Regulation | Government intervention in the workings of a business market to promote some socially desired goal. |
Competition and Outsourcing | Procedures that allow private contractors to bid for jobs previously held exclusively by government employees. |
Federal Communications Commission | An indépendant federal agency that regulates interstate and international communication by radio, television, telephone, telegraph, cable, and satellite. |
AT&T | After an out- of- court settlement broke up the Bell system in 1982, AT&T was awarded the right to sell the long distance services that had previously been provided by that system. |
