Barline | The lines which cross the staff and divide it into measures |
Sacred | Music written for church performances |
Time Signature | This symbol appears at the beginning of the music after the clef sign; contains 2 numbers: the upper number indicates how many beats are in each measure, and the lower number indicates what type of note receives one beat |
Ledgers | These are short lines which are added to extend the range of the staff |
Grand Staff | The bass staff and treble staff connected by a brace and a line |
Measure | The area between two bar lines |
Tie | Two notes of the same pitch joined by a curved line over or under the note Each note joined by this is held for its full value but only the first note is played or sung |
Note Head | The oval-shaped part of a note May be hollow or filled |
Bass Clef | The clef used for notes in the lower pitch ranges F clef |
Harmony | Two or more notes sounded together |
Composer | The person who creates a piece of music |
Pick Up | The note in an incomplete measure |
Repeat Sign | To return to the beginning or previous repeat sign at the beginning of the section. |
Slur | This symbol smoothly connects two or more notes |
Down Beat | The first beat of a measure |
Staff | The five lines and the four spaces |
Tempo | Determined by the number of beats per minute |
Arranger | A person who takes an existing piece of music and re-works it for a different set of voices and/or instruments |
Clef | The sign that helps to organize the staff so notes can be easily read |
Note | The oval-shaped symbols that are placed on the lines and in the spaces of the staff to represent pitches |
Stem | The line that extends from the note head |
Ensemble | This is a group of musicians who perform together |
Treble Clef | This is the clef used for notes in the higher pitch ranges |
Rests | These symbols indicate silences in music |
Unison | This is written when all parts sing the same pitches at the same time |
Secular | This is music written for performance outside the church; non-religious music |
Double Bar Line | This indicates the end of a piece of music. |
Beam | The line that connects two or more flagged notes |
Melody | The main tune of a piece |
Pitch | A musical soun |
