Reasons for Group Formation

TermDefinition
Locality/geography You can join a group based on that fact that it’s in your local community e.g. you love playing soccer and so you decide to join the local soccer club because it is conveniently situated.
Gender We may be grouped according to whether we are male or female. Based on social etiquette. This type of grouping may occur in sporting teams or using facilities such as public toilets.
Shared interest/common goals Form due to members having a particular interest such as a hobby, sporting talent and/or common goal such as church or community fundraising groups. These groups are formed voluntarily and tend to function effectively.
Security Being a part of a group provides us with a sense of security e.g. A neighbour hood watch group that voluntarily meets regularly to discuss and implement safety measures for the local community.
Sexuality Groups may be formed based on a person’s sexuality e.g. a wide variety of gay and lesbian groups within the community such as LGBTI
Specific need Forms in responses to a particular need which may be temporary and the group disbands when the need is met. There are also permanent groups based on specific needs.
Social interaction To enjoy time with others; Groups formed with the primary goal of social interaction include gathering at a party, a work social club and a Mother’s Day group
