4.2 - Communist Party control over the government

How did Stalin control the government? Stalin controlled the Politburo and this body controlled all government departments. All policies were imposed by Stalin and his supporters.
What happened to Lenin's secret police, the Cheka, under Stalin's government? They gained successive new names - the OGPU (Department of Political Police) and then the NKVD (People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs).
What did the secret police ensure? That no one openly criticised communism or Stalin.
When did the Cheka become the OGPU? 1922
When did the OGPU become the NKVD? 1934
